Fraser Island is the largest island off Australia's east coast and the largest sand island in the world.  It stretches for over 123 kilometres in length and up to 22 kilometres at its widest point. The local Aboriginals called it K’gari which, in their native tongue, means ‘Paradise.’

At Fraser Island you can view expansive coloured sand dunes, endless white sandy beaches, lush tropical rainforests, crystal clear fresh water and an abundance of native wildlife. Fraser Island is truly a precious resource, protected for all by its World Heritage Listing.

Maheno Shipwreck

History of the world’s largest sand island

Fraser Island has extensive cultural and natural heritage. The island has an aboriginal history dating back well over 5500 years. The first European sighting of the Island was by Captain Cook in 1770, and it was in 1836 that the Island was officially given the name Fraser Island.

Since then Fraser Island has become both a traditional and European historical sight, ranging from aboriginal campsites, ancient archaeological sites, shipwrecks, former logging camps, as well as the truly

One of the most majestic features of Fraser Island is the vegetation

Fraser Island boasts a collection of unique eco systems from amazing subtropical scrub in the north, rainforests in the middle and mangrove
forests on the west side. Beautiful vegetation covers the entire island from the gullies to the highest of dunes.
Central station is fantastic place to visit, as it is the main hub for viewing the massive SatinayTrees, some of which stretch over 40 metres high. There are around 800 different plant species that grow on the Fraser Island,
some of these species are found nowhere else in the world.
